When Ann Robbins-Udel, a newspaper sales executive in south Florida, rescued a Moluccan cockatoo named Miko seven years ago, the poor bird had a half-inch gash in his chest and severely picked feathers from self-mutilation.

Over the years, an avian veterinarian was able to bring the self-destructive behavior under control; however the feathers remained in “ a constant state of deterioration,” Robbins-Udel says.

Then, in March 2008, Robbins-Udel began feeding Miko cold-milled, organic flaxseed made by Flax USA. The result?

“Miko has (molted) a profusion of tattered, ragged, old feathers and has grown the most beautiful, strongest feathers he has had,” Robbins-Udel says.

Flax USA
Located on a family farm in the heart of flax-growing country, Goodrich, N.D., Flax USA last year added three pet supplements to its 10-year-old line of products for humans.

Flaxy Dog, Flaxy Cat and Flaxy Horse are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support healthy immune systems and shiny coats, says Stephanie Stober, who, with husband John, owns and operates the business.

Flax USA uses a proprietary process that grinds flaxseed without raising its temperature, thus preserving its nutrients and extending shelf life by 22 months, Stephanie Stober says.

“Just add them to the top of food the pet is already eating and, presto, our Flaxy products instantly make the meal more nutritious,” she says.

Dream Coat
If Flax USA is a new entrant to the beautiful-from-within coat category, Halo's Dream Coat is a veteran. The 18-year-old product is a blend of soybean oil, wheatgerm oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, garlic oil, cod liver oil and anise.

“It can help if your pet has allergies or is prone to itchiness,” says Donna Spector, DVM, Halo's veterinary adviser. It is an essential fatty acid supplement made from a natural blend of six virgin oils that provides a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Fatty acids help a pet deal with the itch from the inside out. It can also help improve skin suppleness, reduce shedding and promote healthy growth of the undercoat in pets, she says.

“Traditional pet foods are usually cooked at high temperatures, which often removes or inactivates many beneficial fatty acids. Fatty acids are crucial to skin and coat health,” Spector says.

Breakfast For Your Brain - :: Cincinnati news story :: LOCAL 12 WKRC-TV in Cincinnati

If you're just sitting down to breakfast, chances are that fish won't be on your plate. But, a new report says you can now get all the health benefits of fish, without the fish. That means you might want to change your morning menu today.   Local 12 Medical Reporter Liz Bonis shares details with this morning's Medical Edge.

If you are not familiar with the good fats we are talking about, they are commonly referred to as omega-3 fatty acids. Researchers have discovered that these fats play a role in reducing heart disease and joint pain, but the newest research shows they may enhance brain health, by lowering odds of depression and, perhaps, helping you maintain memory.

Since most of us eat the same nine foods every day and the same breakfast, as you might imagine, breakfast is a good time to get these other foods in and may even enhance brain health and lower your odds of depression.

They are most commonly found in fatty fish, such as salmon. There is some research that also shows we absorb them best from fish, compared to plant sources. But since many people just aren't fans of this kind of fish, a new report from the Food and Fitness Advisor at Cornell University found there are several other foods you could eat and you might want to think of getting some of these foods in the morning, so you'll eat them every day. It's really about breakfast for your brain.

The latest research shows you need about 1.1 to 1.6 grams of omega 3's every day. If you put the foods in descending order, flaxseeds top the list, two tablespoons will give you 3.51 grams per serving. Walnuts are second at 2.27 grams in a quarter of a cup. Then you have salmon at a little over two grams in a four ounce serving. Soybeans have about one gram in one cup, cooked, which means you might want to try edammame. Then there's halibut, with four ounces at .62 grams, tofu... four ounces give you about .36 grams, scallops... four ounces give you .35 and one cup of winter squash gives you .34.

Then the bottom two might surprise you. You even get omega three's in cauliflower and broccoli. One cup, cooked, gives you about .20 grams. While these sources are not as well absorbed as the fish sources, they still may be better than not getting them at all.

A reminder you have to grind flax to absorb it.
